In 2024, the use of health care AI among physicians surged, with 66% of them incorporating AI into their practices, marking a 78% increase from 2023. This rise reflects growing enthusiasm for AI, despite lingering concerns. The AMA survey, which included nearly 1,200 physicians, highlighted that 35% of physicians’ enthusiasm for AI surpassed their concerns, up from 30% in 2023. The survey identified key areas where AI is beneficial, such as reducing administrative burdens, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, and personalizing treatments.

Physicians are increasingly using AI for tasks like documentation of billing codes, creation of discharge instructions, translation services, and assistive diagnosis. The AMA is actively advocating for technology that supports physicians, emphasizing the need for oversight, data privacy, seamless integration, and adequate training to build trust in AI adoption.

Four key insights from the survey include substantial growth in AI usage, positive sentiment towards AI, recognition of AI’s potential to reduce administrative burdens, and the need for regulatory actions to increase trust. Physicians expressed concerns about AI design, privacy risks, and integration with EHR systems, highlighting the need for increased oversight.

The AMA continues to advocate for AI as an asset rather than a burden, developing principles for AI oversight, transparency, and governance. Additionally, AMA members benefit from discounts on travel and entertainment, further supporting their professional and personal needs.
