The CMS Innovation Center has announced changes to its model portfolio, aiming to align with its statutory goals and improve efficiency. These adjustments include the early termination of several models by December 31, 2025, based on evaluations of projected savings, quality outcomes, and operational feasibility. The Center estimates savings of nearly $750 million from these changes.
Models Identified for Early Termination:
- Maryland Total Cost of Care (2019–2026)
- Primary Care First (2021–2026)
- ESRD Treatment Choices (2021–2027; termination proposed through rulemaking)
- Making Care Primary (2024–2034)
Additionally, CMS will no longer pursue the following models:
- Medicare $2 Drug List
- Accelerating Clinical Evidence
The Center remains committed to primary care and value-based care, ensuring participants and patients receive support during transitions. Final evaluation reports will be published to inform future strategies.
